Should I Exercise Even Though I'm Hungry?

protein, weight loss, Dr Petteruti, exercise, tips for weight loss Posted by: ShannonPetteruti

I have heard the theory proposed that going into the gym hungry will force your body to burn fat cells for energy thereby stimulating more weight loss.

The theory just doesn't hold up in practice. Remember, anytime you experience hunger your body goes into a catabolic state. That means that your body is breaking down proteins, Essentially breaking down muscle, in some cases vital organs, including your brain can be effected. (Hungary and mentally dull is no way to greet the world.)

Entering the gym in a state of hunger leads to less effective workouts. You simply will not...

I.M. 120: Chocolate Cherry Protein Smoothie

There's something about cherries I find very refreshing.

Here's my recipe:

  1. 1/2 frozen banana, already in chunks
  2. 1 cup cherry greek yogurt (If looking for low glycemic opt for plain greek)
  3. 1/2 cup frozen cherries
  4. 1/4 Almond Milk for consistency. You may like a bit more or less depending on how thick you like your smoothie.
  5. 1/2 scoop protein powder (This is where you can change the flavor by using chocolate or vanilla, even plain works)
  6. 1 tablespon chocolate syrup. A little swirl on tip makes it so pretty.

Blend...

Flower Eggs: Recipe

egg breakfast, weight loss, dr. stephen petteruti, healthy, rhode island Posted by: ShannonPetteruti

Who doesn't love to eat something that looks beautiful? These Flower Eggs are so easy to make and taste great. The sprinkle of parmesan does the trick. What to do? Grab some bell peppers, cut into rings and cook. Breakfast is served.

Basics:

  • Red, yellow, green, or orange bell peppers. Cut the rings a bit thick so the egg doesn't go over the top. After the first batch you'll get the hang of it
  • Eggs - I prefer organic, cage free, but hey, I'm a vegetarian and feel they should get to run around. Yes, I know it may only be 5 minutes. What's better is to buy from a...

5-minute Protein Breakfast: Recipe

Weight Loss, Diet, Dr. Stephen Petteruti, healthy breakfast Posted by: ShannonPetteruti

Mornings are crazy in our house. I'm sure you can relate if you have children. Between making lunches, hoping you washed their "color of the day shirt" for school, and checking to see if you've signed their nightly folder takes time. Just when you think you are finished they tell you they have a book-fair today and need money. The scrambling to find cash begins. Our boys are on team gymnastics and need their gym clothes and grips several days a week. Grrr, are they clean or am I secretly going into the hamper and pulling out a pair of shorts, sniffing to make sure it's wearable, then...

Summer Fruit Skewer: Recipe

fruit skewer recipe, healthy eating, weight loss ri, weight loss Posted by: ShannonPetteruti

I love making these fruit skewers for a BBQ. If I know there is a cookout in the future I'll try to plan ahead. I have a rectangle pan (it's green on the outside I found at an antique store and wouldn't actually cook it, but it looked cool) that I'll fill with a little bit of dirt and plant some grass. I pack the seeds in pretty tight so the roots hold the skewers upright. Oh who am I kidding, I make the kids do it. Just for the record they love playing with dirt. And watching things grow. So really, I'm teaching them about science, nature and farming (yes farming, this is my story and I...

Quinoa - The Other Grain: Recipe

Category: Healthy Living
quinoa, diet, weight loss ri, recipe Posted by: DrPetteruti

Finding an alternative to "rice, pasta, potato or bread" can be a challenge for some. Quinoa is a great substitute. It has the consistency of rice, cooked like rice, and can take on the flavor of whatever your cooking with. Hint - it can be bland, so using stocks and spices is helpful. Make a batch on the weekend and you can enjoy it all week by changing the ingredients.

What is Quinoa? It's a species of goosefoot, is a grain-like crop grown primarily for its edible seeds. It is a pseudocereal rather than a true cereal, or grain, as it is not a member of the true grass family. ...

Practice What You Preach

In our house we talk with our children about food. The usual, what they like, what they don't, but also about macronutrients. This started at a young age because I never wanted them to be an adult, become overweight and have no idea why. When we eat a meal they will pick out the carbs, protein and sugars involved. When we're in the super market they have certain guidelines to follow; cereal has to have less than 10g per serving. It's remarkable to see an 10 and 8 year old in the cereal isle looking at the labels and saying to each other " This one has 15g of sugar and only a 1/2 cup...
