Dr. Stephen Petteruti has been my PCP (primary care provider) for many years, who in my opinion, is doing an outstanding job.  His sincerity, genuine concern and progressive medical approaches has played a key role in my personal health and wellness.

Last January, after getting/discussing my physical test results with Dr. Petteruti, "the numbers were going in the wrong direction (i.e. had to be placed on BP medication as well as, being...

Should I Exercise Even Though I'm Hungry?

protein, weight loss, Dr Petteruti, exercise, tips for weight loss Posted by: ShannonPetteruti

I have heard the theory proposed that going into the gym hungry will force your body to burn fat cells for energy thereby stimulating more weight loss.

The theory just doesn't hold up in practice. Remember, anytime you experience hunger your body goes into a catabolic state. That means that your body is breaking down proteins, Essentially breaking down muscle, in some cases vital organs, including your brain can be effected. (Hungary and mentally dull is no way to greet the world.)

Entering the gym in a state of hunger leads to less effective workouts. You simply will not...

I.M. 120: Chocolate Cherry Protein Smoothie

smoothie, chocolate, cherry, health, fruit, protein shake Posted by: ShannonPetteruti

There's something about cherries I find very refreshing.

Here's my recipe:

  1. 1/2 frozen banana, already in chunks
  2. 1 cup cherry greek yogurt (If looking for low glycemic opt for plain greek)
  3. 1/2 cup frozen cherries
  4. 1/4 Almond Milk for consistency. You may like a bit more or less depending on how thick you like your smoothie.
  5. 1/2 scoop protein powder (This is where you can change the flavor by using chocolate or vanilla, even plain works)
  6. 1 tablespon chocolate syrup. A little swirl on tip makes it so pretty.

Blend...

It's fair to say that sunscreen is the best anti-aging product out there. It's so good that you REALLY want to wear it EVERYDAY! Finding the right one is the key to actually wearing it everyday. I'm sure a lot of you are like me and hate, and I really mean it with a capitol H, sticky sunscreen. You know the kind you put on, then hold your hands up like you're scrubbing in for a surgery till you get to the sink and finally breath out as the soap washes over you. Ok, so I'm not talking about that one, I'm talking about a weightless,...

Developed around 1980 by Dr. David Jenkins of Toronto, the glycemic index was originally designed as a way to determine the effect of an individual food on blood sugar levels. The focus was on diabetics. This theory was that if the rate of blood sugar increase after a meal was slower, their impaired ability to manage blood sugar would be improved.

Flower Eggs: Recipe

Category: Healthy Living
egg breakfast, weight loss, dr. stephen petteruti, healthy, rhode island Posted by: ShannonPetteruti

Who doesn't love to eat something that looks beautiful? These Flower Eggs are so easy to make and taste great. The sprinkle of parmesan does the trick. What to do? Grab some bell peppers, cut into rings and cook. Breakfast is served.

Basics:

  • Red, yellow, green, or orange bell peppers. Cut the rings a bit thick so the egg doesn't go over the top. After the first batch you'll get the hang of it
  • Eggs - I prefer organic, cage free, but hey, I'm a vegetarian and feel they should get to run around. Yes, I know it may only be 5 minutes. What's better is to buy from a...
