Lipitor for everybody?

A few years ago I was walking through the corridor of the hospital when I  bumped into a cardiologist colleague of mine.

"How are things going?" I asked.

"Terrible" He replied. "My rate of catheterizations is down, damn Lipitor."

He was grumbling that Statin drugs and their capacity to prevent clogged arteries had decreased his business. Over the years the use of these drugs have increased to the point where over 25% of Americans over age 40 now take them. The anti-cholesterol dogma has permeated medicine to the point that many doctors...

Imagine that there was an epidemic sweeping the nation affecting greater than half the population. Imagine that people were dying, the epidemic was linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression, sudden-death, and an increase in human misery in general. Now imagine Doctors, hospitals, Pharmaceutical companies, and the government were doing nothing about it. Or worse yet, were blaming the victims of the epidemic for it's cause. This is not the beginning of a science-fiction movie. Welcome to the great obesity epidemic of the 21st-century.

How did we get to this place?

Do you know where your supplements come from? Do they contain what it says on the label?

According to a report in the New York Times based upon a study done by researchers from Canada who tested 44 supplements from 12 different companies, up to one third of the supplements tested did not contain what they had claimed on the label. Many had nothing in them but fillers, while others had ground up weeds or other ineffective plant substances.
These products were...

It's out there waiting for you, ready to take away your enthusiasm and your optimism. The wall, the weight-loss plateau. In order to succeed on your weight-loss journey, everybody must conquer the wall. Why is it there? And how do you get past it?

Simply put, your body does not like change. Come to think of it neither does your brain. Change of any sort brings stress into our lives, even a change for the better. This is true in the arena of weight loss. Your body perceives the weight reduction as a problem to be solved and quickly swings into action creating counter regulatory...

Living Boulder thanks to Antiaging Medicine

Here I am at 54, after I think 12 knee surgeries (at some point I lost count) running up and down Yawgoo Ski Resort, clearing obstacles, keeping up with my thirty-something wife and my young staff. I practice antiaging medicine so I can live better, not just longer.

I first noticed in my late 40's that I was starting to lose something. It was hard to put my finger on, but I just wasn't the same. Not the same sharpness of mind, not the same physical energy and strength. I started to wonder, "is this as good as it gets?" I was aware...

Creating time, events, and gatherings is good for the soul. It gives us things to look back on and talk about. Maybe they were great experiences or maybe it was something that went so wrong, when you think about it now all you can do is laugh.

At I.M.120 we strongly believe in being active which is why our entire staff completed the BouldrDash Race today. You don't have to be in the gym everyday to lead an active life and sometimes creating memories means going to a ball game. That simple.

You guys were so great during this past week positng your opinions (some good, some a...

The Truth About Eggs

eggs, healthy protein, Dr. Petteruti, weightless RI, Warwick doctors Posted by: ShannonPetteruti

The poor, homily, every day, misunderstood egg. Is it nature's perfect food? Or a sinister vehicle enhancing the risk of cardiovascular disease?

Like most issues regarding nutrition, the answer is a bit more complex than meets the eye. When we consider the food we take it, we also need to consider the person who is taking them in. The same fact holds true for eggs. We also need to consider volume and what the other alternatives might be.

The good thing about eggs is that they are high in protein, typically around 6 g per egg. They're also a controlled portion food. That is to...

I have to admit I am a sweet eater. I can pass on anything salty, but put something with a high glycemic index in front of me and it will be gone. So in our house we don't keep anything I consider "temping" foods becuase I will, without even thinking about it, eat it all.

I came across this recipe and wanted to share it because it looked so good and tasted even better. It's sweet, creamy and cool. Perfect for these summer days and into fall. I'm going to experiment with other ideas for the filling and see what we come out with. The base idea is endless. Thanks to PopSugar for...

The Fridge. Is it your Enemy?

This is the conversation that came before the picture of our refrigerator:

Me: I really want something.

Dr. Petteruti: Like what?

Me: I don't know, but nothing that's in here (as I stand holding the refrigerator door open for the 5th time, hoping magically something has appeared since I last opened it 30 seconds ago.

Dr. Petteruit: Well, there's some berries or a plum. How about and egg?

Me: An egg, really, it's 9:00pm

Dr. Petteruti: People eat eggs at 9:00pm. It's not like it's that outside the box.

Me: Forget it, I'm just not going to...

Weight Loss, Diet, Dr. Stephen Petteruti, healthy lunch, healthy dinner, salad, low glycemic Posted by: ShannonPetteruti

We love this salad at our house. Bibb lettuce is one of the most enjoyable leaves to eat because of the large size of the leaf. Ever try to eat some of the "fancier" varieties and you can't get it onto your fork?

How to do it?

  1. Get a head of Bibb Lettuce
  2. 5 or 6 organic strawberries
  3. 1/2 green apple
  4. 1/4 cup pecans or sesame seeds
  5. 4 large grilled shrimp
  6. 1/2 avocado sliced

This makes a serving for two. The dressing is up to you. Because of the wonderful flavors it already brings, a nice extra virgin olive oil,...
